Jerry Hey – Larry Hall Extended William Adam Trumpet Routine

About the Trumpet Routine

Larry Hall (far right) recording a project for Seawind.

We have received many requests for the trumpet routine that Larry Hall and Jerry Hey practiced together at Indiana University under their trumpet professor Mr. William “Bill” Adam. Larry and Jerry were generous to spend several hours researching and compiling the exercises they practiced along with some of the modifications.

They provided some examples of how they would modify individual exercises to keep them fresh and expand how they trained their ears. Be creative and come up with your own!

This routine is not intended as a one-size-fits-all approach to the trumpet. It should be used as an informative look into their daily routine and how they expanded the exercises. Continue reading Jerry Hey – Larry Hall Extended William Adam Trumpet Routine

About Mike Cichowicz

Mike Cichowicz’s career has been one of many trumpet players’ dreams. Born in Evanston, IL to the son of legendary trumpet performer/teacher Vincent Cichowicz. He attended Pepperdine University in Malibu California. Mike has had a remarkable career performing with Rod Stewart, Tower of Power, Huey Lewis and the News and lead trumpet at Harrah’s in Reno. He currently resides in Chicago, IL where he is active in the freelance scene. He recently began working in the publishing world, working with Marc Dulin, compiling his father’s Long Tone Studies and Flow Studies books.

Vincent CichowiczVincent Cichowicz was member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s trumpet section from 1952 until 1974 and professor emeritus of trumpet at Northwestern University. A lifetime figure on the music scene in Chicago, Cichowicz had served on the faculty at Northwestern since 1959 and as professor of trumpet from 1974 until his retirement in 1998. He began his musical career at the age of seventeen as a member of the Houston Symphony Orchestra and, after military service in the Fifth Army Band, returned to Chicago to attend Roosevelt University. He was a member of the Civic Orchestra from 1947 until 1950 and in 1952 became a member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, where he remained for twenty-three years under music directors Rafael Kubelík, Fritz Reiner, Jean Martinon, and Sir Georg Solti. During this period he also was a member of the Chicago Symphony Brass Quintet and was a participant in the Grammy Award-winning recording of The Antiphonal Music of Gabrieli. His long tones studies and flow studies have become standards in brass pedagogy.
